PRESS RELEASE

Carlisle Squash & Rackets Club win North West Gold Squash Development Club of the Year Award for 2007/08

The North West Award at Gold level for 2007/08 has been won by Carlisle Squash & Rackets Club. Our thanks to Ronnie Bell the Manager/Head Coach and Trevor Musson the Chair who has been tremendous in developing the programme at the club, especially school-club links.

The England Squash Development Club of the Year Awards are designed to recognise and reward achievement and progress in those clubs that are committed to the England Squash Club Charter, Sport England’s Club Mark.

Sport England’s Club Mark is one of the sports most exciting initiatives, providing opportunities to develop clubs, coaches, volunteers and players. Club Charter has been introduced to ensure we as a governing body have common criteria to ensure good practice runs through all our development schemes that provides a focus around which England Squash, Sport England and Sports Coach UK can work together to support good practice in clubs working with children and young people.

The National awards are presented at Bronze, Silver and Gold level with all three winners shortlisted by England Squash for entry into the prestigious Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) Annual Sports Club of the Year Awards.

On Monday 22nd September John Gibson the Area Squash Manager for the North West presented Ronnie Bell with a framed certificate and a cheque for £200 for their outstanding contribution to squash at the club over the past twelve months.

Comeback Complete, Victoria is British Under 19 Champion.

Carlisle Squash Club’s eighteen year old starlet completed a remarkable comeback from serious knee injury by becoming British Girls Under 19 Champion in Nottingham on Sunday 24th February 2008.

Victoria, a pupil at Carlisle N.C.T.C. was unable to play competitive squash for many months due to the injury but was finally give the go ahead to resume playing in January this year. She took the Czechoslovakian Under 19 title and then went on to be the beaten finalist in the prestigious French Junior Open losing to her long time rival Victoria Lust three games to one in the final.

Because of the injury she had slipped down the National Rankings meaning she lost out on one of the two places in the England Mixed Team in the forthcoming European Championships to be held in Stavanger,  Norway in March. She has however been selected as one of the five England players to compete for individual titles at the Championships.

Losing out on team selection only served to make her more determined in last weekends British Championships where after a powerful display in the semi-final she defeated no 2 seed Kimberley Hay to move into the final. Here she met and defeated the number 3/4 seed Sarah-Jane Perry by three games to love to take the coveted British Title. The final was over and done with in only thirty-five minutes with Bell triumphing with game scores of 10/8, 9/1 9/6.

Now as British Champion and with her confidence fully restored she is looking forward to her trip to Norway where she expects to perform well against the best players in Europe.

Victoria’s success is rubbing off on other youngsters in Cumbria, Wigton Squash Club’s Johnathan Honeyman competed in the Under 15 event at the same venue and although unseeded reached the last sixteen in his first major tournament, beating seeded players on the way. He was beaten by the number 5/8 seed Mathew Sidaway after a hard fought three set match.

Carlisle Junior Open Championships 5/6 January 2008

Sponsored by  Cumbrian Properties

Over 60 of Cumbria's junior squash players entered this years event held at Carlisle Squash Club, a first class entry for a club competition that was held some three weeks earlier than normal.

The club is grateful for the support once again provided by Cumbria Properties who are the main sponsors of Carlisle Squash Club.

Although some of the Competitions only consisted of a final it was pleasing to see so many people from the south and west of the county entering. It is expected that the entry numbers in the older age groups tend to decrease as people move away to university etc but with the other age groups well supported the future of junior squash looks safe.

The club would like to thank Paul and Victoria Bell who ran the competition for the first time. Everything ran smoothly and the Saturday session finished well before the expected time. Some people even managed to make it to Brunton Park for the Carlisle United match.
